Reddit was down – the popular discussion platform had a huge outage

Reddit suffered a major outage on Wednesday, plunging its millions of devoted users into discussion darkness, with no place to drop their hot takes, memes, and AMA.

As of 5:21PM ET, the popular discussion platform appeared to be returning to normal.

Down Detector indicated that the worst of the outage reports were over, with its fever chart heading south.

Reddit now says a bug in a recent update was the culprit.

Here's everything that happened, though we still await details from Reddit on why the platform went down in the first place.

Tacoma, Pierce County dodge worst of bomb cyclone damage thanks to this looming giant

East Pierce County took some of the hardest hits during Tuesday’s bomb cyclone, but the rest of the county still has a few leaves on its trees.

Thank you, Mount Rainier.

The 14,411-foot mountain most likely protected the bulk of Pierce County from the storm that lead to the deaths of at least two people further north, according to the National Weather Service in Seattle.

Enumclaw, in King County, saw a wind gust of 74 miles per hour. At 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, the city had more than 1,000 customers without power. Carbonado, Wilkeson, Eatonville and Orting were also digging out from down trees, suffering from power outages and canceling school in some cases.

Shadow effect

Meanwhile, winds were mild as they blew through Tacoma and surrounding areas. Wind gusts at the Tacoma Narrows Airport were only in the low 20-miles-per-hour range, according to the NWS.

Although the bomb cyclone was centered in the Pacific Ocean with its distinctive whirlpool shape, winds blew into Puget Sound from the southeast, according to NWS meteorologist Maddie Kristell.

“Another nature of easterly winds is, they definitely get a boost as they come down our side of the Cascades,” she said. “And it could have also just been they didn’t necessarily have quite enough momentum to continue to carry themselves in through Tacoma.”

The center of the cyclone stayed in the Pacific.

“We would have seen much more significant impacts if it hadn’t,” Kristell said.

Rainfall was minimal — about 1/10-inch — in Tacoma, she said.

Eastern Pierce communities fared worse in the storm because they were closer and more well-aligned with some of the Cascade gaps, Kristell said.

“That’s definitely reflected in the power outage maps that we’re seeing in the east Pierce lowlands,” she said.

Wind gusts on Washington’s coast were in the 40s and 50-miles-per-hour range with an inch of rain falling overnight, according to the NWS.

One Direction stars mourn Liam Payne at funeral

Family, friends, and former bandmates have remembered Liam Payne at the One Direction star's funeral, just over a month after he died at the age of 31.

The private service took place on Wednesday in Amersham in Buckinghamshire, north-west of London.

Payne's former bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik were among the mourners, alongside Payne's girlfriend Kate Cassidy and his former partner Cheryl, with whom he shares a son.

Payne's coffin arrived at the church on a white horse-drawn hearse carrying floral tributes spelling the words "son" and "daddy".

After the service, four pallbearers carried the coffin from St Mary's Church, followed by his parents and Cheryl.

Her Girls Aloud bandmates Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts also attended the service, as did One Direction's former label boss Simon Cowell, who was seen comforting the family.

Presenters James Corden, Marvin and Rochelle Humes, Scott Mills, and Adrian Chiles were also among the mourners.

B.C. Hydro says tens of thousands without power after 'bomb cyclone'

B.C. Hydro spokesperson Kevin Aquino-Bravo, speaking around 8 a.m. PT on Wednesday, said the hardest-hit areas after a 'bomb cyclone' were on Vancouver Island. It's too early to tell when power will be fully restored, he said, but more crews will be deployed to the island.

Trump names Linda McMahon as his pick for Education secretary

President-elect Donald Trump has named his transition co-chair Linda McMahon as his pick to serve as the next secretary of the Department of Education.

The decision, which Trump announced Tuesday night confirming CNN’s earlier reporting, took shape after it became clear that McMahon would be passed over for Commerce secretary. Trump named his other transition co-chair, Howard Lutnick, as his pick to lead the Commerce Department earlier Tuesday after the Cantor Fitzgerald CEO had thrown his name into the mix for Treasury secretary, sparking a battle with hedge fund manager Scott Bessent.

“Linda will use her decades of Leadership experience, and deep understanding of both Education and Business, to empower the next generation of American Students and Workers, and make America Number One in Education in the World. We will send Education BACK TO THE STATES, and Linda will spearhead that effort,” Trump said in a statement.

McMahon, a major Republican donor and a former pro-wrestling executive, served as the administrator of the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term. She was appointed in 2017 and resigned in 2019 to become the chair of America First Action, a pro-Trump super PAC.

She is the board chair of the America First Policy Institute, a pro-Trump think tank that was formed in 2021 by McMahon, Larry Kudlow and other advisers from the first Trump administration.

AFPI has raised millions of dollars since it was founded and has been described as a “White-House-in-waiting,” planning potential policy proposals for Trump’s second term.

Celtics vs. Cavaliers score: Cavs handed first loss as Jayson Tatum leads reigning NBA champs to statement win

The streak is officially over. After 15 consecutive wins to kick off the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers have finally lost their first game of the season, 120-117, on the road against the defending champion Boston Celtics. The defeat ensures that Cleveland would not claim sole possession of the second-longest undefeated start to a season in NBA history. They will instead remain tied with the 1993-94 Houston Rockets and the 1948-49 Washington Capitols.

Boston, which moved to 12-3 on the season, might run away with this game early on. The Celtics led by 17 at halftime behind a sizzling 14-of 22-effort from 3-point land and pushed that lead all the way up to 21 in the third quarter thanks to a stellar all-around performance from Jayson Tatum and excellent 3-point shooting from just about everyone. But Cleveland simply would not go away. An 18-3 run late in the third quarter made it close, and Cleveland cut the lead down to two points on five separate occasions. They just couldn't quite get it over the top, failing to ever even tie it in the second half.

It's a loss Cleveland will look back on with quite a bit of regret as the season progresses. Not only did they cede some ground in the regular season standings to Boston, but they also gave the Celtics control of their group in the NBA Cup. Now, Cleveland will have to rely on either another Cup loss for Boston or tiebreakers with other Eastern Conference teams to advance to the Knockout Stage.

The game was winnable for Cleveland, but a 3-of-21 shooting performance from Darius Garland coupled with underwhelming first-half defense was just enough for the Celtics to sneak out with the win.

Trump names Dr. Mehmet Oz to head Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

President-elect Donald Trump has picked Dr. Mehmet Oz to serve as the administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This key federal agency oversees health insurance coverage for more than 150 million Americans.

“I have known Dr. Oz for many years, and I am confident he will fight to ensure everyone in America receives the best possible Healthcare, so our Country can be Great and Healthy Again!” Trump said in a statement on Tuesday. “Dr. Oz will be a leader in incentivizing Disease Prevention, so we get the best results in the World for every dollar we spend on Healthcare in  111111 our Great Country.”

Trump, who is also seeking to slash spending in the federal government and has long had Medicaid in mind for reductions, also promised Oz would take a scalpel to the massive agency.

“He will also cut waste and fraud within our Country’s most expensive Government Agency, which is a third of our Nation’s Healthcare spend, and a quarter of our entire National Budget,” the president-elect said in his statement.

Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon and television personality, ran unsuccessfully for Senate in 2022 in Pennsylvania with Trump’s backing. He lost to Democratic now-Sen. John Fetterman.

In 2018, Trump appointed Oz to the Presidential Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, reappointing him to the position in 2020.

Oz became a frequent guest of Oprah Winfrey, eventually launching his syndicated daytime TV talk show in 2009. Through “The Dr. Oz Show,” which won several daytime Emmy awards and reached millions of viewers, Oz became one of the most well-known doctors in the country.

His views on Covid-19, however, sparked controversy. Early on in the pandemic, for instance, Oz talked up the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a way to treat the coronavirus — despite the lack of firm scientific evidence that it was an effective treatment. Many of Oz’s perspectives were praised by Republicans at the time.

Oz’s selection continues Trump’s string of unconventional picks for key roles in his administration, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. If they are both confirmed, Kennedy would be Oz’s boss. For CMS administrator in his first term, Trump chose Seema Verma, who had a long history in health policy and consulting with a specialty in Medicaid.
